Multiplayer

This guide only covers movement that is specific to multiplayer. For a full Any% Multiplayer Speedrunning tutorial, go to the ☆ Any% Multiplayer Guide.

This is the final article in the NSMBW Movement Guide. Mario/Luigi/Toad all fundamentally move the same in this game, but there are very subtle differences.

The first and most drastic change between characters is jump animation. Specifically, Luigi and Toad perform triple jumps with different flip animations than Mario, and that can make doing certain strategies that you learned with Mario difficult in multiplayer.

A list of very minute differences in Luigi/Toad vs. Mario:

There are a few basic moves to be aware of that aren’t in single player.

Bubbling

This is by far the most important move in NSMBW multiplayer speedrunning, especially 1p2c (1 player, 2 controllers). Pressing A puts your player in a bubble. If both players enter a bubble, you exit to the world map, and both players lose their powerups.

Shaking your Wiimote will jolt you in the direction of the nearest alive player. This “jolt” is influenced by RNG that will slightly affect your speed and direction of the bubble.

This makes cycle skip in 8-Airship slightly inconsistent.

Even when not moving in a bubble, RNG determines where you move.

When you are close to another alive player, you will magnetize to them at a slow speed.

This is not movement related, but bubbling or pauses the screen from scrolling.

Carrying

Holding 1 and shaking the Wiimote while near another player will pick them up. Letting go of 1 will throw the player and make them somersalt forward, bouncing off of any walls.

Here are the results of carrying another player with certain power-ups:

  • If you pick up a player with propeller, you can prop spin by shaking your Wiimote. If you are not small or mini, spinning and hitting a ceiling will cause the carried player to automatically crouch, making your total height 3 blocks. If you have propeller and pick up a player without propeller, you cannot prop spin, and instead twirl when shaking your Wiimote in midair.

  • If you pick up a player with fire, ice, or penguin, doing a spin jump will throw two fire/ice balls in either direction. You can shoot fire/ice if you are the picked up player in this scenario.

  • If you are mini and pick up another player, you will not be floaty anymore.

  • Carrying a player or getting carried by a player with star will grant the other player star power, adopting the time of their star power timer.
